在英语语法中，when 作为关系副词时，可引导定语从句，也可引导时间状语从句。很多同学在看到when引导从句时，默认为时间状语从句，有时不注意，when其实是定语从句引导的。现在，老师们专注于如何区分它。when 是指导定语从句还是时间状语从句。
在此之前，让我们先回顾一下定语从句的三要素，即先行词、关系词、从句，根据语法句型，定语从句是整个句子中定语的组成部分，修改后的单词称为先行词。用表示时间的连词连接一个句子作为状语，这样的主从复合句称为时间状语从句。

哥伦布甚至把他的兄弟送到英格兰，因为他没有得到葡萄牙或西班牙国王的支持，因为他提出cathay大西洋可以向西横渡。
正如我们所知，例句1中的从句是定语从句，修改面的时间状语in 2003，而例句2中的从句为时间状语从句，修饰的是动词sent。通过比较，我们可以总结出来when 这两种从句有以下四种不同。
第一、不同的修饰关系
when 在引导定语从句时，必须有一个名词来表示这个词前面的时间，即上述先行词；
when 引导时间状语从句时，前面没有名词表达时间，因为when 引导时间状语从句来修饰动词，表示动作或状态的时间。
第二、从句的位置不同
when 引导定语从句时，只能放在主句的时间名词(即先行词)之后；
when 引导时间状语从句时，从句可以放在主句之后或之前(此时用逗号分隔主从句)，例句2可以改写：he failed to obtain support from the Portuguese or Spanish Kings for his proposal that Cathay could be reached by sailing west across the Atlantic, Columbus even sent his brother to England. 例句1不能这样重写。
第三、when的作用不同
when 引导定语从句时，指的是表示时间的先行词。定语翻译相当于使用先行词，这时when在定语从句中做时间状语，修改从句的谓语；
when 引导时间状语从句时，when只连接主句和从句，在从句中不充当任何成分。
例句1，when指代 in 2003, 作Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard, another former Yale provost, as its vice-chancellor时间状语，耶鲁大学任命前教务长艾莉森 理查德 2003年是副校长；例句2when从句中没有成分。
第四、when 的翻译不同
when 在引导定语从句时，可以根据从句的时态进行翻译，若从句谓语动词是过去的，when如果从句谓语动词是未来，可以翻译成当时和当时；when可译为到时、到时。
引导状语从句when，通常翻译成当...时候”。
